Creative Artists at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, here's a CPD Opportunity!

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland has acquired a trial of the lynda.com Campus resource - a vast online library of engaging video tutorials that can help anyone learn software, creative, and business skills.
. 
RCS staff and students are urged to try out this excellent resource during this trial period which will run from 31st October to 14th November.

To learn about navigating the site, exploring helpful features, finding specific instruction, and more, you can view an introductory video and watch the ‘How to use lynda.com’ course.

IT trainer Julie Halstead explains that you will need to create a profile, to try this resource during the trial period:-

• Visit http://iplogin.lynda.com while you are in the Conservatoire, and type in your Conservatoire email address, then click the ‘Create a profile’ button.
  
  You will then be asked to enter your details and create a password for your Lynda profile. Once you have done this you will be able to login to access it via lynda.com from outside the Conservatoire also.

Creative Productivity: When Less Really = More

This video was sent to me in an email yesterday -it's about creative productivity, and giving our brain a break to allow time for inspiration to seep in.  The presenter is Morgan Giddings,  a neuro-scientist with a company dedicated to creative productivity.

It's good.  It takes as long as a slow breakfast to watch it.  Recommended!

 "As part of SURGE 2013, Ferran Orobitg of Catalan street theatre company Fadunito, will be presenting Externet, a new, playful interactive outdoor installation looking at intimacy in public spaces and communication between strangers. Externet involves performers reciting stories they’ve written themselves, each to a single audience member.

"For the Glasgow performances of Externet, Ferran is seeking to run a workshop with a group of first-time - or non-established - writers from as broad a range of backgrounds as possible. Creativity is big at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.  Out of idle curiosity, Whittaker searched the Whittaker Library catalogue to see what we've got on our shelves.

Oh, wow!  Plenty of reading material there.  Take a look.

Artistic Practice: Creativity as Research

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland knows all about practice-based research, so it was interesting to see last week's Times Higher Education (7 March 2013) focusing on this very subject.

John Gill wrote the Leader,  Untangling Creation Myths.
Matthew Reisz wrote the feature, Blurring the lines between art and research.
Nicholas Till wrote another feature, Opus versus output.

If you read THE online, there is the opportunity to comment at the end of articles, so why not join in the debate?!

Research Lecturer Dr Anna Birch has drawn our attention to the Society for Artistic Research, and its new scholarly journal, the Journal for Artistic Research.

The main website is for the Journal for Artistic Research, where you will find Vol.1 (2011).  You'll find out more about the Society by clicking on the appropriate links.

You can also subscribe to the Newsletter, and participate in the Research Catalogue, which is described as an international database for artistic research.  More here ...

The site is heavy on text, light on images.  This JAR blog may be more user-friendly.

Reflection, and Reflective Practice

Whittaker has been notified of a blogpost on reflection as part of research.  As we performing artists know, reflective practice is crucial to what we do.

Showcase your creative work at Pollok House, Glasgow

Hannah Teasdale, Senior Learning Assistant for the NTS, has sent 'Whittaker' details of an exciting opportunity for creative artists in all media.  You can get more information direct from Hannah.  Here's the challenge:-

• Pollok House in Glasgow is seeking emerging and established artists/ creative practitioners to submit proposals for art work to be included within an exhibition at Pollok House Glasgow.
• Student applications encouraged, but anyone can apply
• Great opportunity to display your works.
• Proposals should be in response to selected objects from Pollok’s collection of paintings and artefacts.
• Proposals in all mediums will be considered eg photography, audio/visual projects, sound installations, design,written text, dance and textiles.
• Proposals should be well-considered and the relation to a specific artefact clearly explained. (Link can be explicit or implicit, whether this is exploring the media used, concept, composition or theme.)

AIM of exhibition: to view objects in different ways and use them to inspire new work, new perspectives and new ways of seeing.
