May-Day - Why Creative Artists Should Get Up Early

The story goes that milkmaids would wash their faces in the morning dew on 1st May, to make themselves beautiful and attract a handsome mate.

Forget the mythology!  Welcome to 2017.

Nowadays, we get up early to look for grant funding opportunities and chances to develop our careers in new and innovative ways.  In Scotland, Open Project Funding from Creative Scotland is an attractive continuous programme for people in the creative sector.  Obviously, there are terms and conditions, and the waiting time is longer if you're seeking larger amounts of funding.

So, if you got up early this May morning, why not put your time to good use and take a look at the Creative Scotland website?  The early bird catches the worm.  (Some sayings never go out of fashion!)  From the website:-
"Open Project Funding is a continuous programme, meaning that you can make an application at any time throughout the year and there are no deadlines. You will however need to allow enough time between when you apply and when you plan to start your project to allow Creative Scotland to undertake the assessment of your proposal."  Visit the website:- http://tinyurl.com/CreativeScotlandFundingProgs

Creative Scotland - Funding and Encouragement for the Arts

MONEY    ENCOURAGEMENT   INVOLVEMENT

If you're still a student, you may feel that arts funding is a step ahead of where you're currently at.  But in this modern age, we all need to know how and where to access funding, in the future if not today.  So this is really worth reading.

 CREATIVE SCOTLAND

Creative Scotland's February Newsletter might provide you with food for thought, sparking off ideas for similar or even radically different projects that might attract funding.  There is truly so much going on that you may not even be aware of.  Exciting times.

Read it here.

Meanwhile, one of the news items is directly relevant to our students:- 'Volunteers aged 14-23 sought to join the National Youth Arts Advisory Group.'  Click the link above, to see what that's about.  Wouldn't it be great to have some of our creative community involved?

New writers wanted for performance installation - Creative Scotland

Write then tell a story - on the Glasgow streets.

The Creative Scotland website tells you all you need to know.  If you're interested in street theatre, all the better!

"As part of SURGE 2013, Ferran Orobitg of Catalan street theatre company Fadunito, will be presenting Externet, a new, playful interactive outdoor installation looking at intimacy in public spaces and communication between strangers. Externet involves performers reciting stories they’ve written themselves, each to a single audience member.

"For the Glasgow performances of Externet, Ferran is seeking to run a workshop with a group of first-time - or non-established - writers from as broad a range of backgrounds as possible. The workshops will involve an exploration of a variety of approaches to writing for performance..."  (Read more)

Andrew Dixon - Technophonia blog, about Oliver Searle

Andrew Dixon runs the esteemed and influential Creative Scotland blog.

Today's posting is about Technophonia.  It begins as follows - you'll have to read his posting to see the whole thing!
"Last week I got the chance to see one of the four Scottish compositions commissioned as part of New Music 20×12.

Composer Oliver Searle, together with Drake Music and the Edinburgh Music School, premiered Technophonia at Edinburgh’s Queens Hall. The concert was world class and it was inspirational in many ways. The young musicians performed Searle’s intricate composition brilliantly but what also stood out for me was the ensemble’s use of unique instrumentation."  Read the rest ...
Dr Oliver Searle is on the staff at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Andrew Dixon's latest Reflections on a Creative Scotland

The London 2012 Festival programme - the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad - has just been launched and despite being the furthest away from London, Scotland’s programme is probably the most comprehensive outside of the Olympic host city.
