Web Resource Trials for Musicians in Edinburgh

If you’re an Edinburgh based musician, you might like to know that the National Library of Scotland is trialling some online database subscriptions at the moment.  For example, you can go to the NLS and get access to back copies of music journals.  The back copies are historical, to say the least – not recent back copies!  But there are also newer materials ... you'll need to check these out for yourself!  (NLS also has a Kelvinhall site in Glasgow, now, too.)

Trials are on-site (using NLS computers), so you do have to go to the National Library of Scotland to try out these offerings, but if you use the NLS service, the music librarian is asking for feedback!  See below.
The National Library of Scotland is currently trialling electronic reference services providing retrospective access to music periodicals:-
RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals (1800-1950)
RIPM Online Archive of Music Periodicals (Full-Text)
RIPM e-Library of Music Periodicals

Trial access is for onsite users only but feedback can be given via an online survey:
The trial ends on 6 Nov 2016.
For enquiries email music@nls.uk.

It's not the Format, but the Content! Oxford Handbooks - Music

The Whittaker Library currently has a trial of Oxford Handbooks Online for music students and staff at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

We're not promoting this just because it's "more online stuff", but because this is truly world-class, quality material which we think our readers will be able to make good use of.  So, if you're part of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland community - whether you're registered on music or other courses - do take a look.  There are just 23 online Oxford Handbooks in music, but they cover many relevant and contemporary aspects of the subject.

Because it is a trial, access is only within the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland buildings, and it continues until 30th June 2015.  Look for our name, and click "Sign in", then use your usual RCS username and password

Visit the Collection here.

The Oxford Handbooks series brings together the world’s leading scholars to write articles that survey the current state of scholarship in their field. The articles review the key issues, reveal original arguments and concepts, and set the agenda for new research.
This free access is available until 30th June 2015

Trial of RILM Retrospective - find very old AND very new articles about music

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland subscribes to RILM already, offering music staff and students the best online way of sourcing articles and other writings about music.  It's a quality product - readers are warmly encouraged to explore its coverage.  Registered staff and students can access it anywhere, on any online device, using their Conservatoire login details.

Try an extended database online, on Conservatoire premises!

Now, however, there's more on offer!  We have a trial until 21st February, of RILM Retrospective, which offers a hugely extended dataset going back to 1899.  The trial searches both RILM and Retrospective simultaneously, but - unlike our subscription to the modern database, the trial can only be accessed on Royal Conservatoire of Scotland premises.  (This is because the trial requires our IP address range, rather than using individual readers' logins.)

IMPORTANT

Boxes down the left side of the screen enable you to refine your search.  To succeed in finding older material, the "Full text" option must NOT be checked.
