Musical Pedagogues! Remember ISME

Remember we hosted the ISME conference (International Society for Music Education) here at RCS a few years ago?  Well, this year it's in Helsinki.

We've just received the CFP (Call for Papers), so we thought we'd share it with you:- 

"Welcome to the website for the 34th ISME World Conference.

The call for papers is already out and planning is underway for submissions. The submissions process will open later this month. Note: submissions close on 1 October and there can be no extensions, so start your planning now.

In response to feedback from the previous conference, the call for papers outlines several new opportunities to enable members to interact in different ways and to help members connect and engage even more.

The call for performers is also announced. Submissions will open in the next few weeks and closes on 31 August.

Both the venues - Finlandia Hall and the Music Academy (home of the Sibelius Academy, part of UniArts) -  are very close, almost side by side, so the conference precinct is very walkable. The venues are also accessible."

Call for Papers
Papers, 20 minutes in length, are invited on any aspect of Scottish music. Topics presented in previous years have included chant, Gaelic song, fiddle and bagpipe music, manuscript sources, music publishing, the Scottish diaspora, opera performance, cultural organisations, music education, sectarianism, George Thomson and Haydn, Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, Learmont Drysdale, Hamish MacCunn, James MacMillan and Sally Beamish.

There will additionally be a special session dedicated to papers relating to the history of the McEwen Memorial Concerts of Scottish Chamber Music:-

McEwen Paper Session
We invite submissions for a paper session featuring topics that in some way relate to the history of the McEwen Memorial Concerts of Scottish Chamber Music. The McEwen Commission has supported the commissioning and performance of contemporary art music in Scotland since 1955. A commission is awarded annually to a composer of Scottish birth, descent or residency. Early recipients of the commission include Ian Whyte, Cedric Thorpe Davie, Robert Crawford, and Thea Musgrave. More recently, works have been commissioned from John Maxwell Geddes, James MacMillan, Judith Weir, and David Fennessy. The McEwen bequest has yielded a substantial body of chamber pieces since the first award in 1955, and this collection continues to grow. A list of previously commissioned pieces dating back to 1955, as well as further information about the concerts can be found at www.gla.ac.uk/mcewen
We are interested in papers that in some way relate to the history of the McEwen Chamber Music concerts. Papers may focus either on specific pieces that were commissioned, or on the work more generally of composers who have befitted from the McEwen Bequest over the years. Most importantly, we are interested in papers that aim to stimulate interest in and discussion around contemporary music in Scotland.
Please submit an abstract (250 words) as a Word document or rtf file by Saturday 28^th February 2015 (specifying if you wish specifically to give a paper for the McEwen session), to:-

Proposed conference fees

• £15 as the default half-day without lunch, for any category of delegate.

New Zealand Conference: talks about Scottish Kennedy Family and John Wilson

The Scottish Kennedy family included Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, but it was her father who took the family on worldwide tours, singing Scottish songs to ex-pats.

John Wilson was another Victorian stalwart recitalist.

Cultural impact of Chinese Cinema

This week sees the inauguration of a new research project into the cultural impact of Chinese film in the 21st century, sponsored by the Leverhulme Trust:-

Dr Song Hwee Lim, senior lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Exeter, is leading a 2-year project.

Project launched yesterday, 9 July 2012, with 2-day workshop and keynote by Professor Rey Chow of Duke University.

Writing Britain

Whittaker's weekend has been extaordinarily varied - a vastly delayed overnight train still left time to visit the Writing Britain exhibition at the British Library on Friday morning.

Friday afternoon was a social media conference; then Monday saw me heading to Cambridge University Library for a meeting, and then to hear a lecture, at the Library and Information History Group.

But although all these activities were really good, the jewel in the crown was that fabulous, wonderful exhibition, full of the most evocative and inspiring books, manuscripts and illustrations. To find gathered together so many books that I knew or had read about, and to be reminded also of some childhood favourites, was a delightful way to spend a couple of quiet hours.

Whittaker rhapsodized appropriately to the staff, then wafted off contentedly to Farringdon and the 21st century for the social media event.

If you have spare time in the London. Euston/St Pancras area, why not go and check out the British Library Writing Britain exhibition? I think you'll be glad you did!

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Our Performance Librarian, Lucy Robertson, flew to New Orleans (Lucy in the sky) for an orchestral librarians' conference, yesterday.  We're waiting to hear news not only from the conference, but also about any concerts she attends (with diamonds), whilst she's in Jazz City.  And here's her blog.
