Listen to Rarely-Performed Scottish Music by Robert Johnson

Wednesday 4^th April, 7.30 pm (pre-concert talk at 6.30 pm)

St Mary’s, Great Western Road, Glasgow.

Dr Elaine Moohan, Senior Lecturer in Music and Staff Tutor of the Open University in Scotland, has been working on an edition of music by 16th-century Scottish composer Robert Johnson.  The music is going to be published by Musica Scotica.

Before that, however, Elaine has arranged a pre-publication performance of some works by Robert Johnson on Wednesday 4^th April, at St Mary’s on Great Western Road. She will give a short (about 30 mins) pre-concert talk at 6.30pm with the concert starting at 7.30pm.

Performers from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland will delight you with a programme that includes 12 works by Johnson (about 35 mins) and the remainder of the programme will consist of works by near contemporaries. The ensemble is made up of 10 singers, with the possibility of an instrumentalist as well.

• It's a one-day conference; your fee is just for the conference and the conference luncheon buffet.
• The conference ends with a short early evening concert, and then those who wish are invited to go for dinner afterwards. An initial reservation has been made - delegates thinking of dining should indicate their intentions at the earliest opportunity, to ensure that the reservation can be fine-tuned in good time.
• Speakers should email to advise whether they're using powerpoint, recorded sound, or internet.

BOOK LAUNCH: GAELIC MELODIES FROM 1812

The Musica Scotica Trust announces the publication of "Original Highland Airs Collected at Raasay in 1812 by ELIZABETH JANE ROSS" edited by Peter Cooke, Morag MacLeod and Colm Ó Baoill. This is the seventh volume in the Trust's Main Series of volumes.

Musica Scotica is a series of scholarly editions of Early Scottish Music, founded by the late Dr Kenneth Elliott and published under the general editorship of Dr Gordon Munro.

Volume 7 contains a repertory of Gaelic melodies -- 96 song airs and 54 instrumental pieces -- notated for keyboard in 1812 by Elizabeth Ross, the niece of the Laird of the Island of Raasay, James MacLeod. The editors have provided detailed commentaries on all of the pieces as well as texts and translations for the songs. These distinctive settings comprise a unique and rich view of the musical tastes of MacLeod’s highland home and his island community.

The Musica Scotica conference is in sunny Stirling this year – the 23^rd and 24^th April.  Our call for papers has been out for some weeks, but just in case you missed it/weren’t aware of it/ hadn’t thought about going, we thought we’d share the CFP again today.  The deadline for abstracts (papers or briefer poster session) is strictly speaking this Sunday.  A couple of extra days won’t make much difference, but don’t leave it too long!
