Useful Resources for Music Undergraduate Presentations (at Your Fingertips!)

Music in History - Group Presentations

Are you an RCS student giving a group presentation in the next week or so? Or an RCS lecturer?  If you can log on to the internet, you can stream recordings from our Naxos or Classical Music Library subscriptions.  That might be useful if you're wanting to play examples of what you're talking about.

Come to think of it, our streamed recordings could be useful while you're preparing your presentation, too.  Want to compare recordings? Not a problem.

If you're on campus, just click the Naxos 'internal', or Classical Music Library link, and you'll get straight in. If you're using them at home, there's an external link for Naxos or use the single Classical Music Library link.  Either way, you'll need to login:-

• For Naxos - ask at the library desk for username and password.
• For Classical Music Library - use a process called 'Shibboleth' - find RCS from a list of institutions, click on it, then use your usual RCS login.

Alexander Street Press is continually adding new material, so staff and students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland can never moan that there's nothing new to listen to!

This month they've added to the Classical Music Library ...

The Whittaker Library subscribes to two of the top music streaming services for classical music - Music Online: Classical Music Library (produced by Alexander Street Press), and the Naxos Music Library.  They're a bit like Spotify, but our registered staff and students don't have to pay a subscription, and there are no adverts!  Add to that the useful background information about the music, and you've got a very useful resource.

Click on the first item.  See what kind of information appears down the white, left-hand panel.  Note that when you hover your mouse over the Planets title hyperlink, you get further factual info about when the piece was written etc, but you don't get a full programme note.

Whittaker has just received a news bulletin about one of our streamed music services.  Alexander Street Press tell us that Classical Music Library has added a whole load of new recordings this month. 

This news is too good not to share!

"This week, we have added 5,904 albums (100,261 tracks) into the collection - now around 246,000 tracks in total!

Advice to registered readers at the Whittaker Library, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland:-

The Whittaker Library offers two sound-streaming services: Naxos and Alexander Street Press's Classical Music Library.  They're very popular, so don't forget to logout after your session.  This ensures maximum availability to subsequent users!

Did you know you can embed an Alexander Street Press link to a PowerPoint or a website?  That means you can SHARE a recording with a friend or colleague.

The easiest and most straightforward option is the stable URL link - in this case, 
http://clmu.alexanderstreet.com/view/271815

The other option is an embeddable piece of code so that registered staff and students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland could to listen to the music that you selected, provided they were already logged in. (Beware - the disadvantage is that the track plays automatically,every time a logged in reader clicks on the page!  On the other hand, not many folk WILL be logged in.)  I can see a potential use for this on a VLN (virtual learning network) like Moodle, though.  On-site, where everyone has instant access to Classical Music Library, you could have a page dedicated to the stable URL, and you'd only click on it if you wanted to hear the track.

Even more magical (for the geeks amongst us), is the fact that I downloaded both the link and the code when I was logged in at home, but they're also accessible in the Conservatoire building.  That means you could upload the code while you were doing lesson preparation in the evenings, and use it in lectures by day.  This is a big advantage of the Classical Music Library streaming set-up.  Whilst I prefer the user experience of the Naxos Music Library streaming service, their static URLs aren't quite as interchangeable on and off-site.

• CML is 'portable' in both directions.
• With Naxos, you can upload links at home and use them at work, but not in the opposite direction.

Music Streaming - more good news for 2012

Classical Music Library

adds  more  recordings

Classical Music Library (Alexander Street Press) has added even more recordings to its database for you to stream and enjoy.  Staff and students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland can access these through the Library and IT Database website, here.

Here's their news release:-

"...we have just released released 459 albums (8,384 tracks) into Classical Music Library from a wide variety of labels, including new releases from Haenssler Classics, Mode Records, Bridge, Vox, and Wirripang.

Classical Music Library – one of the Whittaker Library’s music streaming services – has just notified us of a huge addition to their provision.  They’ve now got lots more EMI recordings.  Staff and students can stream recordings via our library website.  Why not take a look at what’s on offer?  Here’s our databases page. 

Subject: Major EMI content release into Classical Music Library and Music Online

I am pleased to announce that we released 1,409 albums (35,688 tracks) into Classical Music Library and Music Online today!  We have now released the remaining EMI material into Classical Music Library, adding to the already 22,000 tracks of EMI already in the database - over 50,000 tracks of EMI in total.

New content comes from EMI Classics, Angel Records, Capitol Catalog, and more.
