Who Visited Herr Henle?

An unusual link to share with you here - the digitized guest book of one of Germany's biggest music publishing houses.  It gives interesting insights into musical life in Germany between 1942 and 1979, with little comments, scribbled pictures and more.  Here's how Henle describe the book:- 

"Claudio Arrau, Yehudi Menuhin, Arthur Rubinstein - the founder of our publishing house Dr. Günter Henle and his wife Anne Liese often invited the most distinguished musicians of the time to their home.

From 1942 to 1979 they kept a guest book. We have now digitalized and transcribed it. In addition we have also compiled several indexes, as well as biographies of the artists who were their guests.

We would like to invite you to delve into this treasure trove with its insights into people, dates and relationships. You can view it in its entirety and free-of-charge online.

Plans and objectives

• Krzysztof Penderecki, the most famous and influential modern composer, will be directing the second »penderecki musik:akademie westfalen im forum mariengarden burlo« from 12th August to 1st September 2013.

• The »penderecki musik:akademie westfalen im forum mariengarden burlo« is the summer orchestra academy forming part of the international classical music festival »musik:landschaft westfalen« which has been held since 2009. It is designed as an annual summer academy with international participation, featuring well-known teachers who give orchestra academies, master-classes for individual instruments, composition workshops or courses on certain themes.

What in the World is Wandelweiser?

'Whittaker' has just catalogued the latest Contemporary Music Review, on the subject of Wandelweiser.

(Contemporary Music Review Vol.30 Part 6, 2011, ed. Nicholas Melia and James Saunders.)

But what on earth is Wandelweiser?  We can now advise you that it's a German composers' collective specialising in aleatory (aleatoric) music.  Chance music, you could say.  'Wandelweiser' is as much a compositional philosophy as the name of the group.

Christian Wolff is an exponent of this approach.  We do have music by Wolff, which you can see here.  One of his recordings particularly associated with Wandelweiser is a CD with the title, Stones, which we have just added to the Whittaker Library stock. Catalogue details here.
