Shades of Dr Who: The Library Portal

Step into the portal, and start exploring ...

Here at the Whittaker Library at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, we have our own place in the RCS Portal, where we can share library guides, information about copyright and referencing, and other useful information.  In particular, the library's subject portals contain links to useful free websites (the sort we don't have to subscribe to!), and now also some free open-source articles that have been listed on reading lists.*

RCS staff and students will find the RCS Portal here:- https://portal.rcs.ac.uk/

This is the Library Portal:- https://portal.rcs.ac.uk/library/

Subject Portals

You'll find separate pages for different subjects:-
Much of the RCS Portal is password-protected, for obvious reasons, but the library subject portals are open-access.

Classical Improvisation

* Musicians studying Classical Improvisation - do take a look at the Library Music Portal.  You'll find a lot of your recommended reading here!

Try out Europeana - Multimedia Portal for Images, Audio, Video, Books ...

http://www.europeana.eu/portal/

Europeana is best described as a multimedia gateway or portal to all sorts of European digital collections.  You can look for images, music, video, books and more, all digitised and uploaded from different libraries, museums and other initiatives.

Folk music, photography, recording technology and first world war archival material are just a few of the subjects covered.  There's a lot about field recording Irish traditional music, and the Irish Traditional Music Archive.

Test Phase Music Channel - Feedback requested!

Right now there's an experimental portal for music, and Europeana wants feedback.  So make yourself a coffee, and do spend a few minutes exploring.  Your feedback is encouraged and welcomed.  Anyone can respond, with institutional comments particularly welcome, so if you lead a course or department, please do make the most of this pilot phase.

Are You a Romantic (where music is concerned)? Bruckner Online website

Bruckner Online

We thought we'd share this - a "large-scale Anton Bruckner Internet portal that includes complete digital copies of all manuscripts and first editions along with information on relevant persons and places." For anyone needing to know more about Bruckner, it sounds like a great place to start!

Bibliolore  is the acclaimed blog of RILM (Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale), which  can genuinely call itself, "the World’s Most Comprehensive Music Bibliography".  The Whittaker Library at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is a subscriber to RILM (our students and staff can find RILM on our digital collections page), but anyone can visit Bibliolore's great blog.

Do You Know Your Ballet Terminology?

At the request of our Musical Theatre students, here is a useful app for dancers needing to brush up on their ballet terminology.

Ballet Lite can be downloaded for iPhone or Android, and is recommended by those who have tried it.  We have added it to our library website on the electronic resources page, via our subject portals.

Download Ballet Lite from one of the links here:-
Find the Whittaker Library subject portals here (scroll right down to the bottom of the page).  You need to be signed up to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Moodle pages to access these.
