Graduating Students Stride into Employment in Glasgow

In today's Evening Times (Saturday 6 July 2013), City Unis among UKs Best for Graduates Finding Jobs

Glasgow and Strathclyde, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Glasgow School of Art all have enviably high employment statistics.  Glasgow Caledonian (GCU) tops them all - and they all give Oxford and Cambridge a run for their money!

Great news!

Guardian Culture Professionals Network addresses the topic of amateur theatre ...

  • "Southbank Centre's £120m redevelopment
  • Is it time we moved the amateur theatre conversation on?
  • Top tips for artist-in-residence schemes"

Here's the link to catch up on these discussions on the Guardian Culture Professionals Network.

Play: Bronte, by Polly Teale

In much the same way as I tell our musicians that they can enjoy our DVDs for relaxation, whilst the acting students are contemplating issues of direction and production, today I'm sharing a discussion about the play, Bronte, by Polly Teale.  It's a book we have in stock here at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's Whittaker Library.  (Catalogue entry)

The discussion appears on The Journal of Victorian Culture Online.  Whilst Victorianists engage in scholarly discourse about the deeper cultural issues, there is probably much here that will interest acting and drama students on a different level.

Charlotte Mathieson, a researcher from the University of Warwick, writes ...

"In May 2013, the Capitol Theatre in Manchester staged a production of the play Brontë, by Polly Teale. Originally staged by Shared Experience in 2005 (of which you can view a short trailer online), the play explores the life and writing of the Brontës through key episodes from their lives and scenes from their writing.  I went to watch the production with fellow Victorianist and life-writing specialist Amber Regis ..."  Read more here ...
Did you know Polly Teale has also written an adaptation of Jane Eyre, and a play entitled, After Mrs RochesterDetails here.

Whittaker alights upon new Performing Arts Websites

A lot can happen in a week.  And while the world moves on, and the global headlines scream for our attention, Whittaker quietly continues to find useful performing arts websites for our artistic community.

This week we've shared links on:-

Unsung composers, Strathspeys, Bagpipes in Northumbria and Oman, Operatic texts and Operatic Enfants, String Pedagogy, Dating Victorian Music, Digital Ballet, and SoundCloud from the Scottish Poetry Library
All at http://whittakerlive.blogspot.com

SoundCloud for Poetry

'Whittaker' is getting quite excited about SoundCloud -an excellent way of sharing audio recordings.  And not just music, either.  Today, Twitter notified us that the Scottish Poetry Library has a SoundCloud page,
"featuring many of our Best Scottish Poets 2012 reading their work soundcloud.com/scottishpoetry…"

Dating Victorian Music by its Artwork

Our own Assistant Librarian Catherine Small won a IAML prize for her Masters dissertation on dating music - so she's a very useful person to consult!

Additionally, and complementing the wealth of knowledge that we can draw upon here in Glasgow, we now find this interesting blogpost from Cambridge, about the pictures appearing on the covers of Victorian music.

Cambridge University's MusiCB3 Blog today writes a fascinating post about the difficult task of dating undated Victorian music:-
