How do you study best?
Readers of Whittaker Live were asked how they preferred to study. Hardly anyone responded, so the results don't prove much. Those who like peace and quiet, or even total silence, were a majority (of sorts). One person liked being surrounded by friends. No-one wanted coffee and music.
Well, we have the perfect environment for all respondents - the Whittaker Library!
British Academy of Composers and Songwriters
It costs £70 a year to join the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters as an ordinary member.
Here's a quote from their website:-
Membership of the Academy is open to anyone who is actively writing music. If the music you are writing today is to have any value in tomorrow’s world, the Academy needs your support in its continuing campaign to protect the value of copyright in an ever changing technological world. Equally, we need to continue our campaign to create a more favourable environment for today's music writers, whatever their area of music. We have two main categories of membership, dependant on where you are in your musical career. Members are emerging writers who have not yet become a member of any royalty collection society or who have recently joined one, such as the PRS. If you have just finished college, are composing as a hobby or have recently started to perform/write then this category of membership is for you.

Traditional song and dance : The James Madison Carpenter Collection
The Universities of Sheffield and Aberdeen have provided input into the online catalogue for the James Madison Carpenter Collection.
The Collection is a major collection of traditional song and drama, plus some items of traditional instrumental music, dance, custom, narrative and children's folklore, from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the USA, documented in the period 1927-55, by American James Madison Carpenter . The Collection was purchased from Carpenter in 1972 by the Library of Congress.
Getting it properly mounted as an online database was a must, and the AHDS (Arts and Humanities Data Service) here in the UK has been closely involved in the project.
Here's the link for searching the collection - (http://www.hrionline.ac.uk/carpenter/search.html)
