Dougie McLean - Caledonia

Did you hear the BBC Radio 4 programme, Caledonia: a Love Song to a Nation?  It was broadcast on Thursday 28th November 2013 at 11.30 am.  If you were in lectures, you probably missed hearing Hardeep Singh Kohli talking to Sandy Moffat, Gerry Carruthers, Eddie Reader, Eddy McGuire, and of course, Dougie McLean himself.

So you might enjoy catching up with it on BBC iPlayer - Click here.

Have we got the famous 'Caledonia' in the Whittaker Library?  Fancy even doubting us!  Of course we have.  Click here for more info.

Audio Advent Calendar from Norway

Our Norwegian music librarian colleagues have again compiled an audio advent calendar for you.  Read all about it here:-

"From the 1st of December and every day until Christmas Day, we will present a vintage recording, with its original historical noises for an authentic “good old times” feeling. In this year’s edition of the calendar we follow Arne Dorumsgaard vision for the collection and presents Edvard Grieg's music in historical recordings, not necessarily Christmas music… However, we are including a link to the previous year's calendar entries, so you can enjoy music for Christmas as well.
"New sound clip(s) and text will be published every day on our website, and you can also listen to the last two year’s music!

"If you wish, you can also sign up as ‘attending’ on the Facebook event (and we’ll use your facebook email).
"Musically yours, the archivists at the Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound."

Competition for Young Choral Composers

Whittaker sighed.  He was far, far too old for this competition.  Never mind - the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is jam-packed, literally teeming with young composers (aged 25 or under) who would relish this challenge.

So, go ahead.  Make an old 'Whittaker' proud, and have a try at this ...

British Library Advertising for Project Team Staff

This is a message that has been circulated to music librarians.  'Whittaker' is sharing it more widely:-

EUROPEANA SOUNDS

Project staff required at British Library for Europeana Sounds

Europeana Sounds is a new EC-funded project, to run from 2014-2017, which will greatly improve the discovery of and access to Europe’s rich digital sound and music collections, by enriching metadata and by doubling the number of sounds and audio-related digital items on the Europeana web portal.

The project will build a sustainable best practice network including the 24 funded project partner institutions from 12 EU member states.

The British Library is recruiting three staff for its London offices to manage the project:

1. Project Manager (full time)
2. Metadata Manager (full time)
3. Project Support Officer (part-time)

Brahms Songs Online

BRAHMS, BACH, SCHUBERT, SCHUMANN, CHRISTMAS MUSIC ...

A message from our music library friends in Helsinki University Main Library:-

E-concerthouse is offering a great addition to its free-of-charge Online Sheet Music Library (http://www.e-concerthouse.com/en/library/online-sheet-music-library), namely the complete songs by Brahms, all available in transposable scores to be downloaded to Sibelius program.

This looks potentially very useful.  It contains a large amount of free music; Brahms is just one of the composers!

Take a look, and let us know what you think!

Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland - and St Andrew's Day

'Whittaker' was all set to tell you about the St Andrew's Day events in the Scottish Storytelling Centre this week, when we realised that the Scottish Storytelling Centre has a shiny new website that deserves a fanfare all of its own.

Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland

The Scottish Storytelling Centre can now be found online at Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland.  This encompasses traditional music, storytelling, and traditional dance - a combination that truly is a marriage made in heaven! We'll let the website speak for itself:-

"Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland (TRACS) was established in 2012 to bring together Scotland's performance traditions - storytelling, music and dance - under a new umbrella. TRACS aims to encourage collaboration between these three art forms, share resources for effective promotion of Traditional Arts activities and to develop partnerships with other organisations that can benefit from our resources. Read more ..."
Here are the three main headings on the new website:-

Dancers, Choreography, Live Art, Writing

Education professor Pat Thomson (Nottingham) has been involved in a project concerning young people's experience of live art.  In her latest blog she provides a link to that project, and then goes on to blog about how "warm-ups" are as useful for writers as for dancers.

Take a look at her blogpost here: Writing Warm-Ups

A blogpost for teachers and educationalists

Why don't students remember what they've learned?  Californian pastor and web-designer Joe Kirby has his own ideas, on his blog entitled Pragmatic Education.

There's interesting stuff here, though it's a bit hard to establish Kirby's context.  Read it with an open mind.  'Whittaker' would have liked to see an 'about the author' page!

Wee 18th Century Tunebook in Inverclyde Archives

An 18th century tunebook turned up in Inverclyde Archives at the Watt Library in Greenock earlier this year.

This weekend, the public has the opportunity to explore some of the archives' treasures, and there will be two talks by Inverclyde Archivist Neil Dickson and Dunbartonshire Archivist Christopher Cassells.  And of course, the wee Hugh Cameron tunebook will be on display.  It's dated 1709, but the musical contents are from around 1782.

Whittaker Library Music librarian Karen McAulay attended a press launch earlier this week and there's an article in the Greenock Telegraph today, Friday 15th November 2013.  There'll also be a mention on Newsround on Radio Scotland at 16.50 today, or catch it on iPlayer.

More about Hugh Cameron and his book ...

Citing catalogue links

You know when you look up a library book, and want to share the catalogue hyperlink? The link works fine, but it doesn't look pretty?

You’re doing the right thing. However, you can use a hyperlink abbreviating website like
tiny.url to make it look nicer:- http://tinyurl.com/MusicInBali

Bookmark this link for future reference:- http://tinyurl.com/

Just another useful tip from the Whittaker Library at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
