If you're lucky enough to be based in Glasgow, it would be a shame not to take advantage of all that's on offer.

195 years ago today, musician Alexander Campbell returned home from his song-collecting trip in the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles. He covered between 1100 and 1200 miles mainly by boat or on foot, gathering specimens for his Albyn's Anthology collection - which he would publish in two volumes between 1816 and 1818.
On 23rd October 1815, Campbell took the mail-coach from Stirling back to his home town, Edinburgh.
No emails or Facebook to check up on, though he had been away for three months. Just a mountain of snail-mail, including communications from all the people whose arms he had twisted to collect songs or tales for his project ...
Yes, RSAMD Whittaker Library has a facsimile copy of Albyn's Anthology. Naturally! Check the catalogue here.

Don't underestimate the links between Welsh, Irish and Scottish Highland music. For example - Irish bards travelled between Ireland and the Highlands. Manuscripts from Mull include harp tunes from Echlin O'Kane, an Irish harp-player. Want early Gaelic harp info? Try this link:- http://www.earlygaelicharp.info/
You'll find a great list of historical editions on the LibraryIreland website. It's designed to introduce you to Irish history and culture. The music list is taken from a book called A History of Irish Music by William H. Grattan Flood. These days, Flood's critical work is considered flawed, but his list is still impressive - chronological - and gives plenty of food for thought.
JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN MUSIC Special Issue - Irish Music in the United States Volume 4/04 (November 2010) is now available online. RSAMD staff/students can access this online through the Cambridge Journals website:-
- Click on the Browse Journals link
- Search under Journal of the Society for American Music

DANGER DANGER DANGER! iPods are ‘damaging our children’s ears’: the Daily Mail says that hearing loss in teenagers has risen 30% in 20 years. Don't take your hearing for granted - and don't underestimate thehidden dangers of those earphones! One in five adolescents had a hearing problem in a sample taken between 2005-6. Posted on the Daily Mail website 18th August 2010. Teenagers might not appreciate this reminder; however, turning down today's decibels could make tomorrow's communication easier.
